Elshadai Tesfaye

African Young Adult Literature, Winner, 2017

Elshadai Tesfaye Biru is an aspiring writer and poet. Born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, she has been writing short stories and essays since the fifth grade. Two years ago, she moved to New York City to attend Columbia University, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science and Philosophy. But writing continues to be her passion – her way of validating her world. Elshadai’s writing is inspired by the capacity of language, words, and metaphors; and the complexity and beauty of people and their bonds.

Elshadai started writing as a small child, sporadically keeping a series of journals throughout her life, documenting her experiences with a style that matured along with her. As an adult, she was drawn to writing young adult fiction because she feels that books meant for young minds are capable of a special sort of magic; through the simple and innocent act of storytelling, they’re able to capture and share thoughts that are full of growth potential.

University allows for little spare time, but when she does get the chance, Elshadai loves to read, her taste ranging from poetry to philosophical essays to romantic novels. She also binge watches TV shows, works on her questionable taste in music, paints, and decided to finally start learning Italian. Her family and friends are an important part of her life, and she tries to spend as much time as she can with them.
