William E. Mkufya was born and raised in Lushoto, the Tanga region of Tanzania. He is a book editor, a publisher, and a writer. William’s passion is writing, he writes for the very young as well as for the very old… and for everyone in between. He has written more than twenty books in both English and Swahili, including children’s books, adult fiction, and young adult novels. Two of his latest books have won the Tanzania Burt Award for African Literature: Face Under the Sea (first prize, 2011) and The Raid and The Eclipse (second prize, 2016). He currently lives in Dar es Salaam.
When he’s not writing, he is reading or gardening. One of William’s favorite quotes is, ‘I think and so I am.’ He says, “Thinking is the biggest portion of the being of the human creature. So, I read because it entertains and inspires my thinking. I write because I hope to entertain and inspire more thinking.”
